Artwork of the Week: Bunny Rabbit

This week's artwork comes from the talented Ms. Tekla Frey, my mother the artist. I featured her work on the blog last year—making her the only artist to be featured TWICE on Swings & Arrows, which is no small feat, let me just tell you. My mom gave me this wonderful little watercolor painting as a gift long ago and once Graham gets his own room I plan to hang it over his bed as I often call him my little bunny rabbit. Redundant, yes, but fitting. Especially when his ears were all covered in the fine dark hair that early bird babies often sport just out of the womb.

Today is also my mom's birthday! So happy day to the woman whose example inspired me to pursue my big art dreams. She goes after learning new skills with gusto, from ceramics to Chinese watercolor to marshmallow-toasting—and she never fails to master each with seeming ease. I have always admired your appetite for instruction and your can-do attitude, mom. Keep it up!

Artwork of the Week: Hoppy Easter!

Shadow Bunny Print, 8.3 x 11.7"
$19.69 from monus maan on Etsy

Happy Easter! Happy Passover! Happy whatever you celebrate! We spent the weekend eating delicious foods cooked by my dad in Long Island. One year he served rabbit—as a goofand it didn't go over too well with anyone but me. I thought it was hilarious! In honor of that delicious long-eared egg-deliverer, I found this great shadow puppet print. Hand shadow puppets are such a neat trick. I've decided I will teach myself a few for Graham's future bedtime entertainment. As long as I keep the story of that time we ate the Easter Bunny out of it, I think we'll be fine.

Taylor & Ng

I'm in love with these Taylor & Ng animal mugs. Adorable illustrations are accompanied by the animals name written in French.

These can be found on eBay if you type in Taylor & Ng.

Artist of the Week: Darrah Gooden

Felix Fox Print, 8.5"x 8.5"

These sweet animal portraits are reproductions of original paper collages on canvas created by artist Darrah Gooden of Dallas, TX. They remind me a lot of Eric Carle and Ezra Jack Keats illustrations; so simple and eloquent. I think they'd look perfect in a child's room or nursery, don't you? Check out more of Darrah's handiwork in her shop, Tiny Fawn on Etsy

Francis Bird, 8.5"x 8.5"

Ember Bunny, 8.5"x 8.5"

Linus Bear, 8.5"x 8.5"

Tito Tortoise, 8.5"x 8.5"
